Warrior Spirit MA

About

At Warrior Spirit Martial Arts, we help children and adults get fitter, feel more confident, and learn practical self-defence in a genuinely friendly, down-to-earth environment.

Warrior Spirit Martial Arts runs classes in Llangefni, Deganwy & Llandudno, serving families across Anglesey (Ynys Môn), Conwy and the surrounding areas.

Llangefni is operated by Warrior Spirit Health & Fitness Ltd (co-owned by Jon McLean and Si Keeble).
Deganwy and Llandudno are operated by Warrior Spirit Martial Arts Deganwy Ltd (owned by Laura Clarke).

To make things simple, enquiries and free-trial bookings can be made via this website for either location.

Who we are

Warrior Spirit is a family-focused, community-based martial arts club offering:

  • Karate for adults - fitness, stress relief and real self-defence
  • Karate for children and teens - Little Warriors (ages 4–6), Junior & Cadet Warriors (ages 7–15)
  • Kickboxing for adults and older teens

We’re not a “macho fight gym” and we’re not a conveyor-belt grading factory. We’re a club where:

  • Beginners are welcome any time of year
  • Nervous adults, shy kids, and neurodiverse students are normal for us, not an exception
  • Progress is measured in confidence, resilience and skills - not just belts

What we stand for

Our mission is to provide a safe, welcoming space for people who might not feel comfortable in more traditional or high-pressure environments, and to support both mental and physical well-being through effective martial arts training.

In practice, that means:

  • Inclusive, beginner-friendly coaching
We meet you where you are. You won’t be shouted at, thrown in the deep end, or made to feel silly for asking questions.
  • Practical, functional karate
Our syllabus is rooted in karate’s original self-defence purpose and draws on Jiu-Jitsu, Aikido, Judo, boxing and grappling to cover all ranges - striking, clinch and groundwork.
  • Character as well as technique
Especially for children, we emphasise confidence, focus, kindness, respect, and mental resilience, alongside physical activity like kicks and punches.
  • Long-term wellbeing over short-term ego
We care about keeping bodies and brains healthy. That means sensible warm-ups, injury-aware training, and a culture of looking after each other.

Trauma and Mental Health Informed

Warrior Spirit is proud to be recognised as the UK’s first Trauma and Mental Health Informed martial arts club, a milestone driven by Jon McLean and his specialist training in this field.

Being trauma and mental health informed means:

  • We understand that students arrive with different life experiences, including anxiety, neurodiversity or past trauma.
  • We work hard to make the dojo feel predictable, safe and supportive, not intimidating.
  • Instructors are trained to recognise when someone is struggling, to respond with empathy and clear boundaries, and to know when to refer them to professional help if needed.

We share the same vision as local schools on Anglesey to help create a “Trauma and Mental Health Informed Island”, using martial arts as one more way to build resilience and community.

How training with us works

You’ll find more details on Our Instructors and Our Karate, but here’s the feel of a typical class at Warrior Spirit:

  • Warm, friendly welcome - we’ll introduce you to your coach, show you around and explain what’s going to happen.
  • Clear, structured sessions - we mix padwork, partner drills, solo practice and (for those who want it) light, controlled sparring.
  • Padwork first, sparring later (and optional) - nobody is forced to spar. When you do, it’s at your pace, with lots of supervision.
  • Scalable challenges - whether you’re 4 or 64, unfit or athletic, we’ll give you versions of drills that are doable and meaningful for you.

For children, classes are tailored to age:

  • Little Warriors (4-6) - games, movement, balance and simple skills to burn energy and build confidence in short, fun bursts.
  • Junior & Cadet Warriors (7-15) - more advanced techniques, structured progression, and a strong focus on life skills like respect and focus.

Adults enjoy sessions that are challenging but realistic, with an emphasis on safe power, practical self-defence and stress relief at the end of a long day.

More than a club: community & family

We see Warrior Spirit as a community hub, not just a place to train:

  • Regular gradings, seminars and workshops
  • Family events - from movie nights to charity fundraisers
  • A culture where parents, carers and students all know each other by name

We want Warrior Spirit to be a place where children grow up feeling seen, supported and encouraged, and where adults find a friendly tribe they can train and laugh with each week.

Beyond the dojo: Health & First Aid

Alongside our martial arts programmes, we offer First Aid training (including Emergency First Response courses and workplace first aid) from our dedicated training space, using Laerdal QCPR manikins for realistic, feedback-driven CPR practice. These courses are open to local businesses, schools, clubs and members of the public who want to feel confident in a medical emergency.

Martial arts, mental health awareness and first aid all share the same goal for us: helping ordinary people feel safer, stronger and more capable in everyday life.

Is Warrior Spirit right for you?

Warrior Spirit might be a good fit if you’re looking for:

  • A fun, friendly club rather than a hardcore fight gym
  • Beginner-friendly coaching that takes your nerves seriously
  • Practical self-defence that respects karate’s roots but embraces modern understanding
  • A place that genuinely cares about mental health, trauma awareness and inclusion
  • A community where your child - or you - can grow in confidence, skill and resilience over the long term

If that sounds like what you’re after, you’ll probably feel at home here.
